Kev Newton

Kev started his 27 year military career joining The Parachute Regiment in 1995. After passing out and completing his jumps course he was posted to 5 Platoon B Company 2 nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment. His first tour deployment was to South Armagh Northern Island where he was a GPMG gunner within his multiple, he was also trained and employed as a specialist surveillance camera operator providing sighting reports and movements throughout the AOR as well as overhead observation of troop movements.


After returning from N.I. he was posted to 2 Para Medium and Heavy Machine Gun Platoon within 2 Para support company. His time within support company seen him deploy to Kenya, Botswana and Zimbabwe where he was introduced to military tracking and its tactical application. He also deployed to Ukraine in a joint exercise with Ukrainian and Polish troops advising them on fire support options and tactics.


In 1997 he was selected to represent Support Company at boxing winning several bouts and developed a keen interest in extreme endurance events and mountain marathons. He became one of the fittest runners within the company and enjoyed the challenging competition.
In 2000 he decided to move to Cornwall and start a family, he was quickly offered a role as a recruiter / trainer within a unit based in the South West. During this time he volunteered to deploy to Iraq in 2003 and played an active role in the initial invasion and occupation of the oil fields in southern Iraq employed as a Platoon machine gunner.


After returning from Iraq he was offered a placement at the School of Combat Search and Rescue (SCSR) where he took on the role of a Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract Officer, instructing servicemen and women from all 3 services on survival tactics and procedures to be conducted in the event of isolation within a hostile or permissive environment.


In 2006 the decision was made to combine 3 units to form a new centre of excellence in S.E.R.E. training delivery. HMS Sultan, MOD Chicksands and SCSR were combined to become Defence S.E.R.E. Training Organisation based in Cornwall. The unit was formed in 2008. DSTO trains around 5,000 personnel from around Defence each year to prepare them for operations overseas, students range from fast jet pilots and aircrew to UK Pathfinders, Mountain Leaders, SFSG and Navy observers and boat crews.
Notable students outside of the military who have attended courses at the unit are:
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge – went through the training as part of his survival training for being a helicopter pilot.
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex – went through the training as part of his survival training for being a helicopter pilot.
Richard Branson – underwent the survival training as part of his world record ballooning attempt.
Guy Martin – trained at St Mawgan for his pedal-powered blimp challenge across the English Channel.
Carol Vorderman – undertook sea drills SERE training as part of her effort to become the ninth woman to fly solo around the world.


Kev became an integral part of the unit offering a wealth of knowledge and experience and remained in the varied roles for 16 years. The unit invested heavily in him sending him on International and European specialist courses to enhance unit training experiences. He quickly became one of the unit’s most experienced instructors gaining qualifications in Jungle, Desert, Artic and Urban survival, evasion and extraction. He became a lead instructor and mentor for newly posted in instructors and ran several international environmental courses overseas.
He was a key instructor for the premier Level C Course taking a lead on all escape and evasion theoretical and practical serials and was the lead instructor for self defence and situational awareness. In addition to this he would also command and control a Platoon strength Hunter Force during the evasion phase of training.


In 2022 Kev decided to exit the military after several business opportunities were presented to him, including becoming a business partner within a very established training company Survival Wisdom Bespoke Survival Training | Survival Wisdom Ltd | Cornwall | England ) and being offered opportunities to support and train celebrities involved in TV survival programmes. He has provided survivalist training for multiple production teams including Swedish Island survival series, Castaway with Ruby Wax, UK Survivor series and Australia Survivor series.
