Settle into the rhythm of the rainforest at Dzanga Lodge, your serene base in the heart of the Congo Basin. Here, we journey into the world of the Ba’Aka, one of Central Africa’s most skilled forest-dwelling peoples. With their unparalleled knowledge as our guide, we learn to track wildlife, identify medicinal plants, and understand the deep cultural bond between people and forest. These encounters are small, spontaneous, and community-led - conversations, not performances.
From there, we trek to Bai Hokou, where expert trackers lead us to one of the few habituated groups of western lowland gorillas. Using traditional tracking techniques learned from the Ba’Aka, we follow their quiet paths under the canopy, always keeping a respectful distance. To see a silverback resting in a bed of leaves, or hear the low calls of the troop echoing through the forest, is to witness something truly sacred.
Next, we venture to Dzanga Bai, a vast natural clearing alive with life. From raised platforms, watch forest elephants gather by the dozens, giant forest hogs wallow, and sitatunga antelope step delicately through the pools while African grey parrots wheel overhead.
We round off the journey with forest walks in search of the elusive picathartes (rockfowl) and cooling swims beneath secluded waterfalls. Every step is led by seasoned local guides and Ba’Aka trackers who know this land by heart. Our approach is simple: go slow, stay humble, and ensure every visit directly supports the people and wildlife that make Dzanga-Sangha extraordinary.
